About the Author

Poppy Evans is an award-winning writer and graphic designer who lives in Park Hills Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH. She is the former art director of Screen Printing and American Music Teacher magazines, and former managing editor of HOW magazine.

Aaris Sherin is an educator, writer and designer based in New York City. She is currently assistant professor of graphic design at St. John's University in Queens, New York, where she teaches both history and studio classes. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Irina Lee is a graphic designer, professor, and writer based in New York City. Her professional experience includes film and video production, interactive media, print, packaging, user interface design and editorial design projects for corporate and non-profit clients. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts and the State University of New York at Farmingdale College, School of Art + Graphic Design.

Cobbled together by publisher

This book contains a wide variety of detailed information related to graphic design, particularly for print. On the plus side, I quite liked the section on grids; I found it succinct and insightful.

On the down side, some sections seem hastily assembled. For example, a new chapter on Standard Forms and Contracts was cobbled together from a series of books from the same publisher--Managing the Design Process by Terry Lee Stone--and includes page references copied verbatim from these books, which make absolutely no sense in this context. (Did anyone proofread this?) This type of content cannibalization suggests the book--or at least this 2013 edition--was driven primarily by the agenda of the publisher, rather than by an author's hand. In fact, the book is part of a series of `reference + specification' titles spanning a variety of disciplines: architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design. It appears to be an assembly-line job.

The end of the book includes a CMYK Process Color Finder, which occupies a full 90 pages, or about 25% of the book. Its wayfinding system is inconsistent at the start, and midway through, two pages of color combinations are missing. Elsewhere, in a discussion of scanning resolutions for digital displays, the authors confusingly suggest scanning images intended for screen output at 72dpi: `This is the best image reproduction you can achieve, because a computer monitor's resolution is just 72 dpi.' This advice is out-of-date and makes little sense to begin with.

A lot of design flaws

The content of the book is pretty good, although there's a lot of wasted pages in the last 1/3 - process colour swatches printed on one side of each page.

However, that's not my biggest concern with the book. I found numerous design and grammatical errors in the books such as references to incorrect page numbers and line breaks where they shouldn't be (look at the "About the Author's" section). The authors should consider hiring an editor next time they decide to write a book.

It's a shame, really, as it could be a very good book.

The Orleans rehabilitation

Ostensibly an account of French political history between 1814 and 1848, The Perilous Crown focuses chiefly on the July Monarchy. Even the first few chapters, dealing with the hundred days and Bourbon restoration up to 1830, are related from the point of view of Louis-Philippe and his sister Adelaide. Indeed, one of the book's surprises is its discovery of, or emphasis on, the importance and influence of Adelaide on Louis-Philippe's career and on restoration-era French politics. This largely reflects Munro's discovery of hitherto untapped / ignored sets of letters in two chateaus and at the national archives. The Perilous Crown is thus sympathetic to the Orleans. It argues Louis-Philippe's regime left a lasting liberal and parliamentary legacy, and that far from being doomed, it fell for avoidable, high-political reasons. The Bourbons, meanwhile, get a far less sympathetic hearing - whether they deserve any better is of course debatable.

None of this is meant as criticism of Munro's well-researched and artfully crafted piece. Like any historian, Munro takes a point of view and works from a particular set of sources, aiming to contribute something new and interesting to his topic. His narrative is attractive and makes for easy reading. It is peppered with quotes and anecdotes without being over-burdened. And in spite of its particular angle, it is general enough to serve as a good introduction to the period. Finally, all contributions are welcome to this neglected period of French history.

Jardin's Restoration and Reaction 1815-1848 has more material on the 1815-1830 period but is a drier work. If you are a student and are working on the July Monarchy, the most complete English-language overview probably remains Collingham's The July Monarchy (published in 1988). Munro's book has the advantage of the most up-to-date bibliography. But the reference work, sadly, remains Thureau-Dangin's seven-volume Histoire de la Monarchie de Juillet, published in the 1890s (in French - good luck!).

A genre bending tour de force

Focusing on an unexplored corner of Hemingway's life, Simmons combines a spy story with an historical novel which I read straight through. He creates characters we can identify with and care about at the same time that he acquaints us with a fully textured portrait of Hemingway and insights into J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI. Simmons is one of the few writers that can create a compelling story in any genre he chooses. I have read every book he has written. Crook Factory is of the same caliber as the others I put at the top of his work: Phases of Gravity, Hyperion, Summer of Night, and Children of the Night. FBI agent Joe Lucas, the story telling main character, is someone I want to know more about. Cameo appearances by Ian Fleming, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergmann and Marlene Dietrich set just the right atmosphere for a stylish spy story. And the action scenes are riveting. I highly recommend this book.

Simmons' Best

I'm a fan of Dan Simmons. His standout books, for me, are Hyperion, Carrion Comfort, and Crook Factory. Crook Factory edges the others out. Sure, I like my sci-fi hard, and I suppose a book like this, based in 95% fact, has the realism I crave. But it's more than that. This book is gold. It achieves perfect congruence. It persists in the mind long after the final words. Heck, it made me want to learn Spanish, read Hemingway, and become a novel writer, to boot. I wish one out of 10 books I read were as good as Crook Factory.

Dan Simmon's Has Written Much Better Books!

The Crook Factory is about the semi-covert intelligence operations which Ernest Hemmingway coordinated in Cuba for the War effort in 1942. The events during this period are recounted by a fictional FBI agent who is assigned by J. Edgar Hoover to keep an eye on Hemmingway and make sure that any 'real' intelligence makes it back to Washington.
As always Dan Simmons employs a very tactile writing style which puts the reader in the center of the action. He does an excellent job of blurring the lines between his artistic embellishment and the actual events which took place during this time. He makes nice use of real people, e.g. J. Edgar Hoover, Ian Fleming, Marlene Dietrich and others, to provide authenticity to the book. Thankfully enough, in his afterword, he lets the reader in on the secret of which parts were fact and which were fiction.
I should mention that Dan Simmons is one of my all-time favorite authors. Everything he writes I end up reading eventually. Unlike many current-day authors he jumps across genres, Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, in an adroit manner. Like Simmons' The Fires of Eden, a book about Mark Twain's adventures in Hawaii, this book falls into category of Historical Fiction, i.e. real events told in a fictional way to make them more palatable to a modern-day audience.
Compared to others in that genre, of which I must admit some unfamiliarity, I guess The Crook Factory stands quite well. But for me, compared to the best of his other works, it wasn't that exciting. The whole exercise reminded me a research project on Hemmingway gone awry.
Strangely enough I have noticed a recent tendency of some of my favorite authors to broach related subjects. In particular, Ernest Hemmingway (The Hemmingway Hoax by Joe Haldeman) and Cryptography (Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson).
If you want to get a feel for how great a writer Dan Simmons can be this is NOT the place to start. May I suggest Carrion Comfort or Hyperion? I think you will enjoy them much more.

Love the book

Love the book, just wish there would have been a hard cover available. I got a break in the binding as soon as I opened it enough to check out a veve. Wonderful book, just crossing my fingers that the binding on the soft cover holds up.

Looking for a book of Ve-Ve?

I being a bit of a symboligist and I'm always looking for books on the subject. And if you have the same interest and are looking for a book on Voudou with almost every Ve-Ve you'll ever want. This is the book for you. Rigaud explains all the different parts of a Ve-Ve and their meaning. This book is also trilingual. Meaning it's in English, French and Spanish. And is not a book for amateurs who's only exposure to Voudou is what they've seen in movies. Definitely a mystic esoteric look at the subject

Coben, a medical doctor seeking information about the shtetls to recapture a sense of his own heritage. Anna had near-perfect recall of her daily life as a girl and young woman in the last days in one of those historic but doomed communities. Her rare account, the product of some 300 interviews, is valuable because most personal memoirs of ghetto life are written by men. Also, very often, Christian neighbors appear in ghetto accounts as a stolid peasant mass assembled on market days, as destructive mobs, or as an arrogant and distant collection of government officials and nobility. Anna’s story is exceptionally rich in a sense of the Korsun Christians as friends, neighbors, and individuals.�Although the Jewish communities in Eastern Europe are now virtually gone, less than 100 years ago they counted a population of millions. The firsthand records we have from that lost world are therefore important, and this view from the underrecorded lives of women and the young is particularly welcome.��

Anna Spector was born in 1905 in Korsun, a Ukrainian shtetl, a small town on the Ros River, eighty miles south of Kiev. Held by Poland until 1768 and annexed by Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia in 1793, Korsun and its fluid ethnic population were characteristic of the Pale of Settlement in Eastern Europe: comprised of Ukrainians, Cossacks, Jews and other groups living uneasily together in relationships punctuated by violence.

Anna's father left Korsun in 1912 to immigrate to America, and Anna left in 1919, having lived through the First World War, the Bolshevik Revolution, and part of the ensuing civil war, as well as several pogroms--deadly anti-Jewish riots begun by various invading military detachments during the Russian Civil War and joined by some of Korsun's peasants.

In the early 1990s Anna met Lawrence A. Coben, a medical doctor seeking information about the shtetls to recapture a sense of his own heritage. Anna had remarkable recall of her daily life as a girl and young woman in one of those historic communities. Her rare account, the product of some 300 interviews, is valuable because the majority of personal memoirs of shtetl life are written by men. Also, very often, Christian neighbors appear in shtetl accounts as a peasant mass assembled on market days, as destructive mobs, or as an arrogant and distant collection of government officials and nobility. Anna's story is exceptionally rich in a sense of the Korsun Christians as friends, neighbors, and individuals.

Although the Jewish communities in Eastern Europe are now virtually gone, less than 100 years ago they counted a population of millions. The firsthand records we have from that lost world are therefore important, and this view from the underrecorded lives of women and the young is particularly welcome.

Good but sterile pseudo-fictional reconstruction of the life of a Jewish girl during Russian Revolution

Good but sterile reconstruction of the pre-revolutionary life of Jews in villages below the Pale of Settlement line (The territories of the Russian Empire in which Jews were permitted permanent settlement). Author shows an apartheid-like life in these villages without a comment or a historic comparison. He demonstrates how hostilities against Jewish population explode at the start of decay of the Russian Empire and rise of the Socialist State. His portrait of brutality and inhumanity of the emerging Socialist State lacks any moral commentary, same as the Anti-Semitic fervor of the Russian Orthodox Church before the revolution.

Either from ignorance or other reasons author gingerly avoids showing role of Judaism in the organization and life of a Jewish shtetl. He choose to reconstruct the life of a Jewish shtetl as seen by a girl mostly distant or ignorant of the Jewish aspects of that life and desperately wanting to assimilate. As the result his reconstruction misses the deeper view of emerging socialist roots of the Holocaust and destruction of the Jewish way of life in the Europe. Still, his efforts preserve a snippet of unique life during great upheaval of history. Anna was extremely lucky to survive and keep the memory of the lives that were.

I strongly recommend for continuation and expansion of that history the great book by Orlando Figes, The Whispereres: Private Life in Stalin's Russia.

A wonderful telling of 1905 life in a Russian Shtetl ...

For me, this has been the most interesting book on life in a shtetl that I have ever read and I do have a fondness for some other titles. My next project is 'Journey To A Nineteenth Century Shtetl' by David Assaf. I hope I can be so lucky as to enjoy reading 'Journey' as much as I've enjoyed 'Anna's Shtetl'.

How Anna became such a highly intelligent person given her early hardships and a repeatedly interrupted education. She was 11 years old, living in Korsun, a small town in Russia. I was amazed at how persevering the attempts were to have a school, to teach youngsters in harshly cold or warring conditions. There was some continuity and ingenious functioning system in Korsun until three back-to-back pogroms rendered the townspeople destitute, their clothes into rags, their food destroyed or stolen, their windows broken letting in the extreme cold, homes burned, senseless murders of townsfolk.

Before the pogroms people had foyers so wide that a two-horse team and wagon could be driven into it....sometimes to stay a whole night. Water bearers would come around selling water. Neighbors knew who to go to, to buy 1-2 small cubes of sugar at a time.

This true storytelling drew me in such a way that I felt like I knew the people, felt a kinship with them.

Absolutely a compelling read

I loved this book and its details of the difficult and harrowing life in the Ukraine. This is the story of my maternal great grandmother and so it is particularly compelling for me. Fortunately, my great grandmother was sufficiently able to give my grandmother and her husband passage to New York.
