About the Author
David Punter is Professor of English at the University of Bristol. He has previously taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Fudan University in Shanghai, among other institutions. His recent publications include Postcolonial Imaginings (2000), Writing the Passions (2000), Gothic Pathologies (1998), and The Literature of Terror (2 vols., 1996). He has also published four volumes of poetry.Glennis Byron is Reader in English Studies at the University of Stirling. She has also taught at the University of Alberta in Canada. Her previous publications include Dramatic Monologue (2003), Letitia Landon: The Woman Behind L.E.L (1995), and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the Poetry of Love (1989).

The Gothic

Puntner and Byron's "The Gothic" offers an introductory survey for 'advanced undergraduates and postgraduates.' What might not be clear, if you don't study the contents before purchase, is that each entry is brief, as are the essays on context and themes. Being that so much of the book consists of thumbnail sketches of elements of the Gothic, the dedicated reader should look elsewhere.

Great introduction

I had little interest in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology before I took a class using this textbook. The text was very readable, concise and easy to understand and really helped me get into the subject matter. I had a great time with this textbook, sometimes I would read ahead because I thought the material was so interesting. Diagrams and charts make the more complicated topics simpler. I have since taken other classes in sociobiology and evolutionary biology, and this text remains the best reference I've come across yet.

Bought the book on Amazon

I ordered this book in January for my coursework in Spring 2010. The book was a valuable resource that my instructor referenced often. I find it unlikely that this will be the type of text that you buy and crack maybe twice during the semester. I bought it new, it arrived in perfect shape in shrink wrap.

I agree with comments stating how most of the concepts and theories are backed by research. It is also very readable as far as textbooks go, the author does not try to overwhelm the reader with technical jargon and unfamiliar concepts. It is a good primer for ethologist minded people, or for those interested as part of a greater understanding of animals.
I am pre-vet and even though this course was not recommended or required by graduate school, I am glad I took the class. It was very enlightening.

Brilliant and Enjoyable

This book contributes a solid argument to the vision of games as positive forces.

The writing style is excellent. When Penenberg asks 'what is a game', he spares us pages of rumination by quipping 'This reminds me of college dorm room debates about how you define art.' When I read this sentence I was so happy. Finally, an author on games who can cut through the fogs of definition and bring on the real research, real facts, and real effects on real people. This book has a vision. No time wasted.

The other core value of this book is that Penenberg works to cover all industries. One chapter investigates how games or simulations aid surgeons in their training. Another chapter details a successful game initiative from DARPA. One interesting note that Penenberg unpacks is that games as a form of learning have been around forever, but only lately have scientists begun to study these processes and prove them as effective, and only lately have smart businesses deployed game models as task platforms for their workers.

The book avoids and even actively critiques the 'put a badge on it' mechanics of the gamification fad, and it seeks an answer behind the process of having fun. Why does time fly when we have fun? Why is Angry Birds so addicting?

The title is doubly fitting, as Penenberg discusses how play can affect the workplace, and how 'play' itself works and operates.

Inspired to try this in my workplace ...

In doing research on gamification, this book provided a unique perspective from an expert who has put ideas into action. Adam provides several fascinating stories from a variety of industries that reinforce it can be done across any business model if you make the effort and design a gamified system that is well designed to keep others engaged and enthused, so that it is challenging and fun. I now feel challenged to figure out a gaming model that can be applied in my area of expertise to where I can disrupt the IT world using gamification. Although this was a fun read, I was hoping to get advice on how to create your own gamification model and what are some useful techniques to try...hopefully that will be covered in a part 2 book!

The author is a journalist and this book is about him, and his experiences with gamification. I got this book to hopefully use for research for a paper i'm writing, but this book contains virtually no useful information. I would avoid at all costs. Not only does it contain no useful information, it is difficult to read because of the tone. If you want to learn about Adam L Penenberg's feelings, attitudes, and observations get this book, if you want to learn about gamification avoid.

Bought this ebook a few years ago online and loved it!

I was starting my own mastermind group with friends a few years ago and bought this book as a guideline to help out new members on our team. The bottom line is this is a very good book to get you started. The concepts are set forth in a way that is easy to grasp. I will also add that this book did served our mastermind group perfectly. Isn't that what you really want when you're getting your team and mastermind group going.

If you have a mastermind group or are thinking about starting one (I highly suggest you do) then I would suggest getting this book. It covers a lot of ground without getting to heady. It's a quick read and covers the points that need covering. It's a GREAT way to get started with masterminding.

An absolute MUST for grayscale enthusiasts!!!

Wow!!! Nikki has set a new standard for coloring book artists across the world with this amazing and special book! Not only are you getting 20 beautiful images of women of various fantacy, you get three and a half pages of instruction on how to color grayscale, what materials you can use, basic colored pencil techniques, basic marker techniques, what colors to choose, and the best way to blend colored pencils on top of a grayscale image. Nikki also took the time to explain the paper she choose specifically for this book. The book itself ihas a glue binding. There is also a paragraph about the book with a link to her grayscale coloring website where you will find many more tips, tutorials, and examples of grayscale coloring. Now to one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE parts of the book. For every picture in the book, you will find a small 3x4 colored image for your coloring inspiration AND two more of the images uncolored so that you can play with your color choices before you color your full sized image. How neat is that?! No more regretting color choices halfway through a picture! You can use one for pencils or watercolor pencils and the other for marker! This is not only a coloring book, its a coloring lesson book with invaluable tips and techniques tried and true by Nikki herself. In this edition, The Beginner's Edition, the pictures are slightly darker which means using even a single color brings out many different shades. It's also a great way to practice your shading before you move on to her other edition of this book, The Advanced Edition, where the pictures are lighter giving you more freedom with shading and using more colors. Now that grayscale coloring is becoming more popular, there are more and more grayscale books out there but none of them have the care, time, and thoughtfulness of Nikki's book. It truly sets the bar for future grayscale books! This book is an absolute MUST for those who are already into or interested in trying grayscale coloring. It will bring you hours of enjoyment and you'll be amazed at what your finished work looks like! I was given my copy of this book in return for my honest and unbiased review. I highly recommend this book!

This book is worth more than 5 stars. She really thought of everything with the quality and the test images to try out color schemes and mediums before putting them on the actual picture. The pictures are beautiful and this book is just overall amazing. One of my favorite books.

A fantastic book for everyone, beginner to beyond!

This book is stunning and eyecatching. It is a standard size, 29cm x 21cm (11 x 8.5 inches) and glue bound. The cover is a glossy card, with a half coloured image from the book in a limited colour palette.�
The paper is not your standard self published paper- it is thicker and smoother, and much more suited to the image style in this book.
I had no trouble with pencils, and could achieve quite a few layers with wax and oil based pencils. I experienced no bleeding or shadowing with fineliners, but some heavy shadowing with markers. Images are single sided, so this isn't an issue. Make sure to pop a few sheets of paper behind the image to protect the next one.�

Images�
This book is one of a few grayscale books coming out recently, and is a fantastic example of a greyscale book done right.�
There are two versions of this book, the beginners edition, which I am reviewing here, and the advanced edition, which I will be reviewing next week. The beginners version has darker shadows and details to guide you, making it a great option for those new to greyscale or wanting an easier book.
The images are from the artists previous books, but rendered in greyscale, not black and white lineart. Images are surrounded by a black border, preventing them from entering the spine at all.
The introductory material is one of the great features of this book. There are 4 pages of greyscale tutorials, introducing you to the basics of colouring greyscale images. There are also some techniques for pencils and markers explained in this section. The artist has a huge amount of information, tutorials and product reviews on her website as well.
After the introductory material, there is a section with tester images. This is three small versions of each image - one with the artists original colours, and two blank versions for you to test media and colours before starting the full size version.
Intricacy and line length is a bit tricky to evaluate in a greyscale book, but the images do have mainly larger �areas with only a few intricate components.�

Health�
If you like fantasy, this book will be a great one for times of anxiety or pain. The imagery is the type that lends itself to distraction. If greyscale colouring is new to you, it is a great way to start with some simpler images.�
For times when your concentration is low, this book would be a great fit - the images don't require a huge time investment, and you can even colour the smaller tester images if you feel the larger ones are too much.�
Those with visual or fine motor impairments should not struggle with these images - there are few intricate areas, and the shadowing and depth means that these are forgiving of a slip of the hand. But as always, please check the images before you decide!�

Henderson, on the faculty of Auburn University, offers a survey of the Mexican War from a Mexican perspective. Instead of the common depiction of Mexico as the victim of the U.S. and its racist Manifest Destiny, Henderson emphasizes Mexican agency in going to war, which reflected a profound sense of weakness. Mexico's revolutionary experience had produced a virulent factionalism based on divisions of race, class, region and ideology. The Texas revolt of 1836 only made it more clear that Mexico was too weak to populate, control and defend its northern territories, but that opinion was derided within Mexico. Instead, politicians of every stripe denounced the policies of their rivals. The only common denominator was that Texas must be reconquered, even if that meant war with overwhelmingly superior U.S. military and economic power. But the Mexican people remained largely indifferent—otherwise Winfield Scott's landing at Vera Cruz and his decisive march on Mexico City would have been impossible. Taut and concise narrative

This book is a great read on a topic that is too often ignored by Americans (North Americans, that is!)--the origins of US-Mexican relations. Packed into 191 pages, this book is concise without losing anything necessary to tell the story. Henderson zeroes in on the flip side of Manifest Destiny and discusses the impact of US expansionism on its southern neighbor. He does so without reducing the Mexicans to passive victims of US greed, but active agents in their own destiny...and their own defeat as it turns out. Henderson develops the main Mexican protagonist in this drama, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, as a full-blooded and fatally flawed character in Mexican history. Stephen Austin and his role as Texas empressario and later Texas/US patriot is also fully discussed here.

The book is also a valuable contribution to the debate over immigration from Mexico, and the pervasive hostiliy that has affected it.

Casual readers of American history may be surprised by the less than flattering image of the Lone Star State during this time.

Military buffs beware--this book does not dwell on either the military strategy or tactics used in the war.

The crisis that led to the Mexican-American War.

An excellent book about how the Mexican-American War took place. The author shows how the politics and evolution of both countries resulted in the war of 1846-1847. Mexico and her politicians knew they were going to lose the war, but because of stubborness and pride, they decided on the confrontation with the Americans. Polk pursued the expansion of the country out of a Manifest Destiny belief. Little of the writing is on the war itself, 95% of the book is the politics that brought about the war. I commend the author on going against the trend of writing about battles, and focusing instead on why both parties found themselves at war.

This is a nice informative read about the war. The author research his topic well and made it very readable. For those interested in this long forgotten war, this is a nice book.

Dr Henderson does it again!

Dr Henderson as a history teacher at AUM (Auburn University at Montgomery AL)is the resident expert on South/Central America. As I read his book, most of it came across as very familiar. He had expounded these same thoughts in several of his classes taught at the University. I have had the fortune to take several of them and can assure readers, he is as good a teacher as he is a writer.

What Dr Henderson does is blow away some very old fables created by both sides. He highlights the simple fact that Santa Anna was not the only individual in Mexico who wanted, for whatever reason, a war with the US. A faction riven Mexico, so brillantly illustrated in detail in this book stumbled into a war for many reasons, not least of course was nationalism. Santa Anna simply rode the wave to power and managed to get killed thousands of Mexican conscripts in a war against a smaller tho much better led and equipped foe.

Another fable is the one of the well equipped/trained Mexican army...no one disputes the Mexican soldiers bravery, especially the US army of the time but no one talks about the quality of the Mexican forces themselves. American regulars far outmatched their opponents in every manner. American militia units also performed better than then Mexican opponents (of course the Americans were all volunteers) The American officers also were generally of better quality and only in the engineers were the Mexicans on par with their enemies. Equipment goes without saying, in every aspect the Americans had at least equal (cavalry wpns/infantry muskets) and in artillery, naval power, logestics-the Americans dominated their enemies.

American politicans too get their comeuppance, Polk is aptly labeled the chief instigator of the actual war. His goal of controlling Texas and northern Mexico was most likely one he had of doing peacefully, but he did not back down when the threat of bloodshed was poised.

Quite rightly, Dr Henderon stays on the political side of the war. The military aspects have been done to death and anyone with even a passing knowledge of the war knows it was an excellent example of a military campaign. For those wanting to know backgrounds of such an event, this book will both indulge and surprise you.

He also has several other books on Mexico including the Mexico Reader. They are all worth the time to find and read!

New Perspective

This book was a great help to me as I search for varied information about cohousing. Although it is written from the perspective of a researcher, it has exstensive interviews with people from various cohousing communities around the world. The text features case studies of cohousing in the us, canada, new zealand, australia, and japan. the author also reports on interest in cohousing in korea and south africa.

unlike the most widely read books on cohousing, by mccamnt and durrett, this book is written from a far more international, progressive, and radical worldview. i am in the process of starting the feasibility phase for an affordable (i.e. low-income) cohousing community in Buffalo, NY and it is refreshing to see that cohousing is not just a hippie-bougie phenomena. in fact, meltzer contradicts the widely held belief that cohousing has clear-cut origins w/ the middle class in denmark, and offers evidence and comparisons of the cohousing that developed in the netherlands and sweden at or before the cohousing in denmark- with varying results, based in part on their more grassroots, working class, or feminist origins.

At the very least, this book offers all of the people considering or in the process of building a cohousing community, a new perspective, a wide range of ideas for design, environmental considerations, social considerations and composition, cocare practices in other communities, as well as economic factors, challenges, and solutions that have been achieved in places like berkeley cohousing, cohousing cooperative in New Zealand, and quayside village- just to name a few.

at the most, it is an inspiration to those of us w/o equity, friends in high-places, the ability to afford private workshops, or the abilities or our health- b/c here you have specific case studies of communities around the world that have built and designed their own communities with the same resources and challenges as we are working with.

Let's agree, first off, on one important thing: riding horses is not the same as riding motorcycles or four-wheelers. Many of the people I know who ride expect to get on a horse--any horse--and control it as they would a machine. Every horse the same. Every signal with the reins nothing more than steering with handle bars. Right?

Wrong! The essence of Dorrance's book, TRUE UNITY, is really quite simple: horses are individuals, complete with personalities as varied as their human counterparts and realizing this fact is the beginning of finding the unity that Dorrance espouses.

TRUE UNITY, like the process of achieving it with a horse, is not easy. It's easily one of the most complex books I have ever read. I found that I had to read and reread sections several times in order to get the gist of Dorrance's lessons. I had to act as if Dorrance was in the room with me, explaining his experiences and I had to listen as carefully as I could and "feel" his ideas. In the end, I found that the content was exceptional and the fact remains that dealing with horses is an exercise in shared feelings between two individuals--the rider and the horse.

Some have noted that this book doesn't follow enough of a lock-step process to handling horses. What they seem to have wanted was an owners manual for horses. Step 1: Find a horse. Step 2: Climb aboard. Step 3: Ride and ride and ride. Step 4: Put horse away. Again, Dorrance makes it clear that this book was never meant to be a set of steps to take with guaranteed results. Those who feel otherwise should stick to machines.

I have to take exception, though, with the editing. The job of an editor, being one myself, is to help communicate the meaning of the writer as concisely and as clearly as possible. Given this fact, Milly Hunt Porter, the editor here falls flat on her face and the readability problems with this book, such as they are, arise, in my opinion, from Ms. Porter's ineptitude as a communicator. It becomes readily apparent that Ms. Porter was nothing more in the process than a glorified secretary, taking down, verbatim, Dorrance's sometimes rambling reminiscences about handling horses. It's apparent that she didn't take time, as she should have, to ask clarifying questions and then communicate her findings to the reader. As my title indicates, I don't blame Dorrance; I blame Porter.

Handle this one with care. If you're expecting a well-written, flowing, easy read you will be sorely disappointed.

For me, now that Tom Dorrance is gone, I wanted, whether clear or not, to read his thoughts about getting into the heads of horses and, in the end, the read was well worth it.

True Unity

"Natural Horsemanship," whatever that term means, begins here. To me, the term means being able to see the world through your horse's eyes. It means understanding equine psychology. It means that you understand and work with the horse's natural instincts. It means being as gentle as possible but as firm as necessary in order to communicate with your horse. The emphasis is on communication - a willing communication - between horse and rider. One of the key concepts of this book is to let it happen rather than trying to make it happen. This means to cause the wrong thing to be difficult and allow the right thing to be easy. It means approaching your horses with empathy, kindness and respect. Practitioners of "Natural Horsemanship" do not use force, fear or intimidation. If this overall philosophy sounds worthwhile, then you owe it to yourself to go right to the original source of the revolution in horsemanship set in motion by Tom Dorrance, Bill Dorrance and Ray Hunt. These are the founding fathers of this movement.

* (That said, I personally believe that there are other practitioners of NH that actually do a better job of explaining the concepts of these giants to the average rider. Among the new breed of NH practitioners, I personally like the approach and teaching methods of Pat Parelli -- who learned directly from Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt, Clinton Anderson, Ken McNabb, Denis Reis and Craig Cameron. And, of course, Buck Brannaman. He has cowboyed and ridden countless miles on the open range with the Dorrance brothers and Ray Hunt. He is perhaps their best student and the one who most closely tries to follow their approach to horsemanship. He is a superb horseman, the best roper in the world and a fine human being as well.)

If you aspire to excellence in your horsemanship, this is a must read. If you are looking for a "how-to" book, this is not it. This is a deeply philosophical book in that it provides a broad, conceptual framework in which to think about and interact with your horse. You cannot speed read or skim this book. In order to "get" Mr. Dorrance's message, you must read it slowly and meditate upon what he is saying.

In this book, he is attempting to do the almost impossible. He is trying to explain the importance of FEEL, TIMING and BALANCE. He can tell you what to strive for, but he can't feel the horse or experience timing and balance for you. You will only know these things when you actually experience them for yourself. The value in this book is in bringing these critical concepts to a conscious level.

In order to get the full benefit of this book, I would highly recommend that you also purchase the two CD set from Margaret Dorrance and listen to them over and over. You can purchase these at [...].

Definitely for the Advanced Horseman!!

This is a wonderful book written by an extremely skilled horseman. The book is hard to read at times because Mr. Dorrance tends to be kind of vague on his techniques. But then, I'm not really sure he had too many "techniques." He just understood horses like few have ever done.
