About the Author
Richard Blonna Ed.D CHES has a bachelor's degree in Psychology from William Paterson (1973), a Master's Degree from Seton Hall University in Education (1976; specialization in Counseling) and an Ed.D from Temple University in Health Education (1986; specialization in Health Counseling). Dr. Blonna worked for 15 years for the New Jersey State Department of Health before coming to William Paterson University in September of 1986. While employed by the NJSDH, Dr. Blonna worked in the Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program, AIDS Program, and Family Planning Programs as a field worker, supervisor, counselor, health educator, and health education consultant. Dr. Blonna's areas of interest are stress management, counseling, epidemiology, and the use of technology in teaching community health. He has written three textbooks; COPING WITH STRESS IN A CHANGING WORLD (Mosby Publishing), READINGS AND WEBLINKS IN HUMAN SEXUALITY (Morton Publishing), and HEALTHY SEXUALITY, SECOND EDITION (Wadsworth Publishing).

Jean Levitan completed her doctoral work at New York University in the Human Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Life program within Health Education. She has taught an undergraduate course in human sexuality for over 30 years. Professor Levitan is a fulltime member of the Department of Community Health at William Paterson University, and an affiliated faculty member in the Women's Studies Department.

The fundamentals of biotribology are also covered, particularly its applications to endo-articular mammalian joints such as hip and knee joints and their arthroplasty. In addition there is a treatment of the rapidly emerging knowledge of tribological phenomena in lightly-loaded vanishing conjunctions (nanotribology) in natural systems and very small devices such as MEMS and high density data storage media.

A very good book

The book gets its objective: to inform managers, academics, students, consultants, about supply chain management (SCM) key success factors. The book is very clear and uses the tipical management language with focus on logistics and supply management terms. Because of the readers segment focus (managers, consultants), the book doesn't use mathematical models but shows many examples of supply chain management good practices, all obtained from firms operating in diferent countries.
The introduction gives an overview of the SCM, the following chapters devolop the concepts and methodologies, about the SC integration (pull-push approach), network planning, customer value, global issues, among others.

As a supply chain expert for more than 10 years, I found this book abit academic and not based on practical truth.
Obviously not covering all elements of supply chain but giving more theoritical information instead. Given examples are more unique to those companies. It should better to give clear guidance against practical concerns with necessary methodologies.

An amazing piece of work

A bird without wings is a well crafted romance. But it isn’t your run of the mill boy meets girl story. Roberta Pearce has added suspense to the romance in the form of an unsolved mystery and missing treasure. The shifts between the romance and suspense are skillfully woven and there isn’t a moment of boredom. I am particularly impressed by Callie Dahl’s ceaseless fount of knowledge. I’m not sure if it is the author’s own passion or a wealth of research, but the little tidbits kept me riveted. There were just so many interesting facts thrown in that are utterly fascinating.
The characters were strong without being jarring, and the little quirks they have endear them to you and make them believable. I am glad I read this book. I wish more romance novelists would try to have a good storyline in their novels. This is well worth a read and an amazing piece of work.

A breath of fresh air in the market!

Roberta Pearce' A Bird Without Wing starts with a common, cute situation: a mousey girl secretly head over heels for her boss, Luscious--erm, Lucius. Soon enough, though, we discover that things are not quite what they seem: there are many layers to Callie's personality, and her family and upbringing played no small part in shaping who she is when the story begins. I won't spoil it for you, but she's definitively not your average 'employee in love with the rich guy'.

Lucius himself makes for an interesting hero as well, likeable, but a just a bit arrogant at time and with issues of his own, namely his family, which is the very definition of degenerating old money. Unfocused, cut from reality, and hoping that some mysterious family treasure will solve all their problems if they can put their hands on it.

Brought together by a common friend and colleague, Callie and Luscious (yeah, I'm gonna keep call him that) work on a 'secret' assignment he came up with to finally set his family straight: Callie must demonstrate with absolute certainty that the Ransome's family legendary treasure doesn't exist.

Again, I won't spoil, but overall, this makes for a fun, different read. At times deeply intimate and emotional, at times a bit hot, and that manages to explore very convincingly the dynamics of a budding relationship (Something that, oddly enough, 90% of all romance books fail to accomplish, choosing to go for the easy way, which is not the case, here).

The book is also served by an excellent, consistent writing, that was really the cherry on top of the cake for me! :)

Don't read this book, no violence or gore!

Since my noir novelist notoriety is already down the drain after reviewing For Those Who Wait, I might as well review Roberta Pearce’s A Bird Without Wings.

The author was concerned that I would be bored reading her books due to the lack of blood and violence. And disturbed people. However, knowing beforehand that Callie was unlikely to stab Lucius in the eyes or Lucius ending up a spree-killer actually made me focus on their interaction. And I found both Callie and Lucius a lot more engaging than the protagonists of FTWW, mainly because they seemed more ‘fleshed out’.

Callie is a frumpy genius with a crush on her boss, Lucius Ransome, who is called Luscious by the female staff for obvious reasons. Her best friend Rachel learns that Lucius is looking for a researcher into some family history to distract his family while he gets the family’s affairs in order.

Grumpy Lucius hires frumpy Callie, who surprises him by disagreeing with him about a painting, but he doesn’t start noticing her bodacious body after Rachel gives Callie a makeover.

Lucius is always called in to fix the problems of the Ransome family, as he seems to be the only one with some sense. The rest of the family seems obsessed by some ancestral treasure and Callie has to disprove the existence of the Hidden Ransome Treasure while Lucius can fix the problems without his family interfering.

I thought this was a pretty good plot for a romance novel. I admit I haven’t read many, but in comparison with FTWW, where the protagonists aim at preventing a wedding from happening, ABWW is definitely more engaging plot-wise.

Another interesting juxtaposition is that Callie is from a poor background, suffering from self-esteem issues, and focuses on money as important, as people who don't have any are wont to do. Lucius, however, is born into a rich family and doesn't think money is that important. Through studying the Ransome family for her research Callie learns the real value of money.

One thing that irked me about Pearce’s prose is her tendency to use alternative speech tags or combining action with speech tags, instead of using beats or standardised speech tags like ‘said/whispered/yelled’. The reason it irked me is that speech tags like 'she averred' have tendency to break the spell as I'm reading. The first time I came across 'averred' I actually had to look it up, now it's 'God, she used that verb again'.

Apart from Pearce's use of speech tags, the prose flowed well and I stayed up too late reading the last few chapters. Pearce's has a few instances where her protagonist, who apparently has total mnemonic recall, explains historical facts in a way that skirts exposition but thankfully stays on the interesting side and doesn't become the dreaded info dump.

The ending was predictable, but well played out.

As to the ending--I disliked the epilogue intensely to the point where I felt it was a blemish on an otherwise well-written and clever novel. Let me explain:

The novel ends with all the issued tied in a neat bow and the protagonist are all set to live happily ever after. Turn the page and there's an epilogue in the form of a letter Callie sends to a Constance Simms, who turned out to be the second-grade teacher from the beginning of the book. Since I didn't read the book in one sitting, I had no idea who Simms was again (thank God the ebook has a search function) and I thought the information in the epilogue was wholly unnecessary for the story, except to re-iterate and confirm what the ending already concluded.

My advice to Pearce: Trust you readers and lose the epilogue.

I heard that Pearce's next novel will include a sociopath in love, so I'm eagerly awaiting an ARC...

About the Author
George Trombley is a professional Japanese interpreter who over the past 16 years has interpreted for corporations such as Microsoft, IBM, NTT DoCoMo, Lucent Technologies, and in countries throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In addition to Japanese, George has also co-authored the Korean From Zero! series and consulted on Chinese, French, and Spanish language books. Yukari Takenaka moved from Himeji, Japan to the United States, and taught Japanese for over 10 years while co-authoring custom lessons for students that eventually became the basis of the Japanese From Zero! book series. I love George at yesjapan

I love George at yesjapan.com he is funny as hell and has some great information in the videos. Personally I found these books to be more towards what I would consider a cram session. Nothing against people who enjoy this type of learning, but I guess it just really takes a lot of focus for me to get prepared to go through it. I've instead been using nihongomaster.com and it's awesome. But I would highly suggest using both, as I've found certain places teach certain ways to learn Japanese and you will want to experience a few different sources to find out what works best in the beginning.

Then it becomes a lot easier to merge into other peoples work... like for me Japanese From Zero is starting to be a little bit more exciting after nihongomaster

Another excellent book on getting started with Japanese. If you've come this far, then you already know that the lessons are well organized and teach you the things that are most useful. Also, this book has a noticeable jump in difficulty from JFZ 3 so make sure you nail the concepts in before starting this. Other than that, I love the JFZ series and will be now be starting the online course 5!

I started collecting albums decades ago.. NEVER enough .!! But, what good is have a massive collection if you do not know 1. What you have.. 2.. What is the REAL value in dollars.!! 3. Most Importantly - Who are the artists and how did they progress in their respective careers over the years.. Vinyl Heads - This book is a must..

Four BIG stars for US vinyl prices less one for no UK, or Japanese LP's!

Great guide that only has listings of U.S. LP's rather than an International listing which would have made It the best guide in the world. so four stars.
Useless for collectors of Japanese, UK, or EU vinyl which Is a shame.

Great for US release LP value determination

Very helpful guide of the retail value of Near Mint LP's issued in the U.S., however, some more esoteric US releases with hobby value of more than $10 are missing. Nonetheless, a very exhaustive and helpful guide.

Great Slav repertoire book

This is a very good book on the popular Slav defence. Plenty of detail, yet still very user friendly; even if you've never played the Slav before the excellent 30 page intro will get you up to speed very quickly.

Vigus has picked a repertoire that offers some good counterattacking possibilities, while still being practical and easy to learn rapidly. Obviously, the focus is on meeting standard 1.d4 openings, but he does give some brief tips on facing other sidelines. The Slav, like the Dutch or QGD can be used against any non-1.e4 opening.

Some examples:
In the mainline 6.Ne5 he suggests 7...Nb6 which is not well covered elsewhere.
4.e3 he picks Bg4.
3.Nc3 he goes for dxc4.
And he also has an interesting idea about how to face the exchange. While Vigus explains his choices well, he usually provides an alternative line (briefly) so you are not forced to follow his preferred repertoire.

If the above moves don't make any sense, don't worry it's all made very clear in the 11 chapters + intro. The book is 224 pages long with a useful index of variations at the back.

I had been interested in the Slav for a long time, but didn't know where to begin in creating a solid but easy repertoire. Well, James Vigus has done all the hard work for me!

The Slav is more solid than the Dutch IZ and more counterattacking than the QGD. Also, white can't avoid it like they can the Nimzo, Benoni & Benko. I find that the Slav tends to dovetail well with players of the Caro-Kann, Scandinavian or French.

A Good, Solid Opening Book

I recently decided to make the switch from the Nimzo/QID as Black vs. d4 to the Slav. I didn't really know where to start, and as an e4 player, I didn't have a lot of familiarity with the Slav - from either the Black or the White side.

This book was a godsend. Vigus has done all the "heavy lifting" here and has produced an opening book that makes it easy to familiarize yourself with the salient points of the Slav, and to create your own repertoire (or just borrow Vigus'...).

Get this book and Cox' "Dealing with d4 Deviations" book and you will be ready as black for ANYTHING 1.d4 can throw at you.

Definitely recommended.

Best Book on the Slav

James Vigus's book "Play the Slav" is an important upgrade in existing literature on the Slav defence. Until now the best introductions to the Slav were
"The Slav vs 1 d4" by Silman and Donaldson, "Winning With the Slav" by Markov and Schipkov, and "The Slav" by Sadler. These are still useful albeit dated, and the later two are somewhat more comprehensive than Vigus's repetoire book (Silman and Donaldson is also a repetoire book), but Vigus has left them all far behind. If you buy one book on the Slav, this is it. Supplemented by Burgess's "The Slav", the classic and very comprehensive theory book by Graham Burgess, this is all one needs today.

Vigus's 34 page "Introduction" is alone worth the price. This is the best introduction and study of the Slav ever written in English. Through the study of about one dozen carefully selected games he covers the main strategic themes of the Slav: (1) Black's light square bishop, (2) the restraint pawn structure (c6/e6 vs d4/e3), (3) Black's doubled f-pawns, (4) Black's c6-c5 break, (5) Black's e6-e5 break, (6) the open centre, (7) Black's isolated e-pawn, (8) White's d5 break, (9) e5 vs e6 with open d and c files (which Vigus calls "Argentinean structures), (10) in the spirit of Chigorin(Black's Bg4 and Bb4 ideas to exchange bishop for knight), and, lastly, (11) Symmetry. A day or two with this very well presented material, and you can begin to play the Slav and generate ideas straightaway.

Vigus's repetoire choices won't please everyone. For example, he disdains the highly topical and very sharp 6 Ne5 Nbd7 7 Nxc4 Qc7 !? for what he names "The Sokolov Defence" with 7...Nb6. He provides a more or less convincing arguement by means of thorough analysis, and a smattering of TN. The explanations are clear, and the analysis by and large quite good. One cannot always agree with his evaluations, but Vigus gives us plenty to work with. Also, his unorthodox treatment of the Exchange Variation, with 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 cxd5 cxd5 4 Nf3 Nf6 5 Nc3 Nc6 6 Bf4 answered by the rare 6...Nh5, which Vigus names "The Russian Counterattack" will not be to everyone's taste, but it serves to liven up what can be the one boring reason not to play the Slav. Vigus treatment of the classic Dutch variation and the Tolush-Geller gambit (5 e4) are more traditional, but thorough and instructive.

Vigus's writing is solid and enjoyable. His explanations lucid. The index and bibliography are a plus. He uses a number of complete (and near complete) games in the text, without adopting the often tiresome illustrative games approach of many opening books. Even though this is a repetoire book, it gives a broad and good overview by which one may learn the Slav.

The binding is weak, typical of Everyman publishing, and after a year of use some of my pages and leafs are falling out.

Recommended for players rated between about 1500 and 2200. Lower rated players will gain more from the introduction than from the rest of the book. There are some interesting ideas here for masters, as well, although they are scattered about in the analysis.
