Strategies and processes of superb stock pickers
By investingbythebooks
I love stock picking and I love stock pickers. Not the way I love my wife and kids, but still. This is a book that covers the strategies and processes of eight superb stock pickers plus one of the few persons ever who truly have mastered the game of market timing. The author Glen Arnold, investor and professor of investment and finance at Salford University, has in my opinion grasped the essence of value investors like Ben Graham and John Templeton, the GARP strategies of Peter Lynch and Philip Fisher plus all the other superstars this book covers.

Of course you could say that the reader would get a fuller picture of these investors by reading John Neff on Investing, The Essays of Warren Buffett, Investing with Anthony Bolton etc. but why not take this excellent short cut? It is a smorgasbord of some of the best concepts in finance. The reader becomes acquainted with Fisher's in depth method for corporate research called scuttlebutt and Ben Graham's concepts of Margin of Safety and Intrinsic value. Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger teach you to stick to what you know, i.e. to keep within you circle of competence, and wait for the fat pitch when the opportunity in the franchise with an impermeable moat shows up. Top that off with George Soros theory for understanding market dynamics called reflexivity and you have a toolbox that will take the reader a long way.

It is always interesting to see how persons who know their subject interpret the deeds of the investment greats. There are also quite a few books in this format with John Trains The Money Masters from 1994 and Jack Schwinger's 1989 classic text on top traders called Market Wizards as the prime examples. These two books and Arnold's The Great Investors all share the structure of simply lining up a number of investors one after the other - in this case roughly 50 pages on each. To succeed with such an elementary story line you, as a reader, really have to get under skin of the portrayed investors. Arnold does a good, but not great, job with presenting the various personal backgrounds and the effects these had further on. On the other hand the book is pedagogic with pictures and flow charts that try to explain the quintessence of each investor's methods. This and a text with a good flow make the book very accessible and both the novice investor and the more seasoned one may benefit from the reading.

Arnold also includes a very short introduction displaying some commonalities amongst the persons he portrays. Habits such as to be a business analyst rather than a security analyst, of controlling emotion, having consistency in the approach used and the effort to constantly try to learn from mistakes are selected as mutually used. Ideally I think the author could have made an additional effort to tie this together after presenting his all-star line-up. Why not end with a discussion on how the investors differ, which ones share the most commonalities, if someone is an odd man out (clearly Soros) and how all this ties in with differences in investment horizons, temperaments and much more?

One of Sir John Templeton's many clever quotations is "The four most expensive words in the English language are `this time it's different'". Apart from pointing to the fact that the equity investor - both in times of panic and of hubris - should take notice of the fact that the stock market over time fluctuates around trend earnings that grow rather steadily, it also reminds us that successful long term investing really hasn't changed over the last century. This is also why there is so much to learn from these previous masters of the money game.

If you have the time you should absolutely read the books written about and by each and one of these investors, but if not, Arnold's book is a really good substitute.

Cosmic Orientation Guide
By M. Smith
This is an excellent resource for the beginner. A series of 40 exercises designed for the observational astronomer... night-by-night (thus knowing the sky in 40 nights.) Mr. Schaaf expalins the moon's phases towards the beginning of the book with an excellent explanation of the Earth's movements in relation to the sun and the moon's orbit around earth. He tells you exactly what to look for and, more importantly, why you want to look for certain features/objects (the lesssons build upon one another.)
It's important to point out that you don't need a telescope to complete the lessons, but I still would recommend using one... it will enhance your experience and appreciation.

A great beginner's book to the night sky
By A Customer
I've always been interested in the night sky, and after reading a number of magazine articles, I thought it was time to learn more about the stars and galaxies above.
"40 Nights to Knowing the Sky" will help any adult learn more about the night sky and how to prepare for that first look through a telescope.
Each chapter is well written and easy to understand. The book has a lot of reference material, including pictures and drawings, to use well into the next century.
If you're beginning a hobby in amateur astronomy, this book will be a great addition to your library.

Great general information book
By John Esher
This is an excellent "primer" book for beginning astronomers, or anyone interested in the night sky. It begins with very general concepts and builds on them each succesive night. Even if you have no knowledge of astronomy, after completing this book, you'll be able to understand the motions of the planets and stars. As well as where to locate fabulous sights to see when outdoors any night.

Enter the Past Tense: My Secret Life as a CIA Assassin, by Roland W. Haas

While at Purdue University on an NROTC scholarship in 1971, Roland Haas was recruited to become a CIA deep clandestine operative. He underwent intensive training to prepare for insertion into hostile areas, including High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) parachuting and weapons instruction. In the course of his first mission (to East and West Germany, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Romania, and Austria), he assassinated several international drug dealers. On his return, he was thrown into an Iranian prison, where he was physically and psychologically tortured. Over the next thirty years, he served the agency on an as-needed basis, engaging in such activities as hunting down and eliminating members of the Red Army Faction and extracting Soviet Spetsnaz officers from East Germany. His cover jobs included being a part owner of an Oakland health club, which brought him into close contact with steroid abuse in professional athletics, drug abuse in general, and the Hell’s Angels, whom he believes tried to have him killed. He also served in Germany as site commander for the Conventional Forces in Europe weapons treaty. His most recent cover was as the deputy director of intelligence in the U.S. Army Reserve Command, which involved him with the Guantanamo detention facility.

A true story that pulls no punches, Enter the Past Tense also chronicles Haas’s descent into, and recovery from, alcoholism that resulted from the stress of this extraordinary life. It is an eye-opening look at the dark, but many would argue necessary, side of intelligence work—and one that readers won’t soon forget.

From Booklist
When he was in college in 1971, Haas was recruited by the CIA. After extensive field training, he embarked on a life of deception, double-dealing, and (he admits this freely) murder. But, oddly enough, that's not the focus of his autobiography. Instead, Haas emphasizes the toll his profession took on his personal life. The challenges of maintaining a cover identity—his included being an English teacher and part owner of a health club—are, we learn, extremely taxing. Living the kind of life that requires lying constantly about who you are and what you believe can cause enormous pressure to build, and it's no surprise that Haas' life story includes alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression. Spy-genre fans will eat up the details regarding the author's top-secret missions into foreign countries, but it's the book's discussion of the difficulties of balancing public and private lives that gives it weight. An important addition to the espionage literature. Pitt, David

Review
“The story of our government’s role in using highly trained professionals to do certain unsavory but very necessary types of undercover/clandestine missions is not often pretty but has been in need of telling for some time. I can’t think of a more knowledgeable and experienced person to tell that very important story than Roland Haas.”—From the Foreword by Col. Ben S. Malcom, USA (Ret.) (Col. Ben S. Malcom)

“An incredible story of derring-do well told, including international intrigue, assassination, and deception, with a dash of Hells Angels and personal redemption mixed in. Not only does Haas reaffirm the old adage that ‘truth is stranger than fiction,’ but his is an account likely to cause considerable heartburn at the CIA, for which he worked as a contract employee for nearly three decades.”—Don Bohning, author of The Castro Obsession: U.S. Covert Operations Against Cuba, 1959–1965 (Don Bohning 2007-05-29)

"Haas's tale is definitely entertaining. . . .[his] insights into the cultures he encounters are often engrossing, and he goes into fascinating detail about aspects of his 'profession.' "—Sam Jemielity, Playboy.com (Sam Jemielity Playboy.com 2007-07-05)

“Often reads like the latest entry from Ludlum or Le Carr . . . fascinating.”—Book News, Inc. (Book News, Inc. 2008-11-21)

A complete fabrication from start to finish...
By D. Godfrey
I bought the book about 18 months ago and never got around to reviewing it. Let's just say that just about all of the inconsistencies have been pointed out ad infinitum (no, the CIA doesn't recruit drug-addled 19-year-old college dropouts with nothing to offer the world). I'm sorry I never got around to reviewing it while Haas was still alive. I'm also embarrassed for the US Army Reserve Command who employed Haas and did nothing about his lies, even going so far as defending his rights of "free speech" and not taking a position on his book or even giving him the slightest reprimand (Haas claimed that he went TDY under false pretenses, among other things). However, I will post an article from Russ Bynum of the Associated Press. Notice carefully what Paula Weiss, CIA spokesperson, has to say about Haas. For all of the conspiracy theorists who claim that the CIA will never confirm or deny employment, I think this part in the article pretty much sums it up: "The CIA denied Haas had ever worked for the agency. 'This individual was not a CIA employee ever,' said CIA spokeswoman Paula Weiss." There you go. For all of you Kool-Aid drinkers who will still play the game that Haas played and say, "Well of course they would say that," I can only say that there is no hope for you and that you need to do a serious self-examination of your own critical thinking abilities. To paraphrase Sam Harris, somebody could tell these true believers in Haas that their significant other is cheating on them and they will require hard evidence. However, this guy comes along and writes a bunch of unproven and wild claims and you buy it hook, line, and sinker. Here's the article...

Author of disputed CIA book kills self on accident

By RUSS BYNUM (AP) - 26 August 2010

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- To his wife and friends, Roland Haas was a patriotic hero who secretly risked his life for the U.S. government during the Cold War, yet critics denounced him as a "James Bond wannabe" who fabricated a memoir claiming he had been a CIA assassin.

Regardless of which version is true, police and Haas' family insist the gunshot that killed the 58-year-old author in west Georgia last weekend was an accident, a fatal fluke without intrigue or any connection to his disputed past.

Haas was found dead Saturday night behind his car at a roadside in Newnan, a quarter-mile from his home. Investigators say he accidentally shot himself in the leg and bled to death after the bullet pierced his femoral artery. They found Haas' own gun on the ground by his head.

Three years earlier, Haas published "Enter the Past Tense: My Secret Life as a CIA Assassin." In the book, he claimed to have worked as a Cold War secret operative in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He wrote that he had assassinated international drug dealers, helped Soviet officers escape East Germany and had been tortured in an Iranian prison.

The book was denounced as a hoax by several former CIA officers who said Haas' spy story was too outlandish to be true. The author's wife stands by his memoir and said her husband wasn't a man who told elaborate lies.

"There are a lot of things that happen all over the world that nobody knows about, and it's supposed to be that way," said Marilyn Haas, his wife of 30 years. "To me, he was a hero. He was a patriot."

Before his death, Haas spent more than 15 years as a civilian intelligence officer for the Army Reserve at Fort McPherson outside Atlanta. When his book was published, former CIA polygrapher John F. Sullivan was so outraged he wrote a letter to Haas' commanders, asking why they would employ a man trying to pass off fiction as fact.

Sullivan, who has written two books of his own, said Wednesday he was sorry to hear Haas had died. But Sullivan insisted Haas' memoir contradicts everything he knew about the CIA after 31 years with the agency.

"I'm convinced his entire book was a total fabrication," said Sullivan, 71, of Reston, Va. "He was a James Bond wannabe. And he profited from it."

The CIA denied Haas had ever worked for the agency. "This individual was not a CIA employee ever," said CIA spokeswoman Paula Weiss.

Lt. Col. Bernd Zoller, a spokesman for the Army Reserve, confirmed Haas was employed as a civilian intelligence officer, but said the job mostly dealt with maintaining computer networks and security.

"For the Army Reserve, there's not a whole lot of intelligence gathering," Zoller said.

Coweta County sheriff's deputies found Haas when two passing motorists heard a gunshot and called 911. One witness who pulled over told investigators Haas was bleeding but said he was OK. He died before an ambulance arrived.

Coweta County sheriff's Maj. James Yarbrough said Wednesday police are confident nobody else fired the shot. He said investigators suspect Haas may have stopped his car because he was having medical problems.

Haas' wife said he had open-heart surgery in November and afterward suffered a mini stroke. More recently, she said, Haas had surgery to remove a kidney that left him with nerve damage to his hands.

"Honestly it was a fluke accident," Marilyn Haas said. "Nobody else was involved."

Worthwhile Read
By Arn Poe
I received and read the book this afternoon. My opinion (without looking anything up on the author) was that much of the story was quite believable, but the dialogue sounded like something out of some hokey spy novel. I figured that was a sign that the author was probably 'legit', but just not too good at writing/remembering dialogue.

Part of what is convincing about the book is his attention to detail - but detail that is often not really important to the reader in understanding the scenes described. That "unrelated" detail does serve, however, to ground the author in reality while he was experiencing some fantastic (and frankly, some less-than fantastic) events. There's also, sometimes, a striking lack of detail in scenes that might otherwise have served to make the book stronger.

That said, after completing the book, i went online and looked up Mr. Haas and reviews of his book. Most reviews were simply opinion ("he's delusional!", "he's an American hero!"), but the most interesting things to be found online were letters to the editor between Haas himself and another ex-CIA author, found on a local (Georgia) newspaper from around the time the book was released.

I don't want to spoil the book - it really is worth the read whether or not you believe his story - but there are some very good arguments both for and against the truthfulness of this story. Haas cites his current military position (and associated security clearance - which requires an extensive background check) as "proof" that the government isn't denying his book, while his detractors point to the same point as possible evidence that he has admitted to someone it is false ...

Is Haas a liar, spreading dangerous myths about the CIA, or is he just a guy who has finally found a platform to get an eventful (and controversial?) past off his chest? This is one of those books that i think you really have to read and draw your own conclusion from.

Not outside the realm of possibility...
By Lew Knick
It always amazes me that when someone doesn't like the premise of a book, they first deny the events ever occurred and then insult the writer as a liar. About half the reviews of this book fall into this category.

I personally cannot judge whether the episodes are factual or imaginary but as a one-time member of SOG and Air Commandos, they seem reasonable or at least, fit within my experience set.

What is obvious is that someone somewhere owes Haas a big one.

Consider his descent into illness and near madness. He became so debilitated he was finally unable to do his job or even leave his house yet he was supported during the lengthy period at home. Then during his extended hospital stays, his final rehab portion was approved for many weeks longer than is usual under regular group insurance coverage. Then, he resumed work in a very responsible position as if nothing had happened. If one doesn't see that as evidence "somebody" had his back, nothing will. Somebody feels a debt is owed for the years of risky assignments with no official status or ongoing compensation.

As a piece of writing, the text is amateurish...cluttered with misspellings, poor paragraphing and punctuation and convoluted sentence structure. More than once I had to re-read a sentence to get his point; a clear sign of limited writing ability.

BUT - the fact that he didn't have a proofreader or editor does not, in my opinion, lessen the content of the book.

Triumph of Justice : Closing the Book On the Simpson Saga, by Daniel Petrocelli, Peter Knobler

When Daniel Petrocelli was first approached to represent the family of Ron Goldman in the O.J. Simpson civil trial, he was one of the few people in America who had paid little attention to the Simpson criminal trial. His first inclination was to turn down the case. But as friends and clients urged him to accept, as he got to know not only the Goldmans but the facts of the case and the human tragedy lurking behind it, Petrocelli realized this was something he had to tackle head on.

Never having tried a murder case, putting his firm's considerable reputation at risk, confronting a media swarm for which he was totally unprepared, and facing an overwhelming financial disadvantage, Petrocelli nonetheless went on a personal and increasingly passionate mission to bring about justice. Triumph of Justice is a chronicle of that mission.Petrocelli's insights, observations, and inside information not only show us how he convinced a jury to find O.J. Simpson liable for $33.5 million in the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman--proving to the American people that their legal system does indeed work--he also makes the story a compelling and exciting legal read.

Among the revelations detailed in these pages:
Petrocelli's ten-day, no-holds-barred deposition of O.J. Simpson
What Petrocelli learned from the incendiary depositions and interviews of Kato Kaelin, Faye Resnick, Marcus Allen, A.C. Cowlings, and others
The surprising realizations that emerged from a mock jury trial, which Petrocelli lost
His dramatic face-to-face courtroom confrontation with O.J. Simpson on the witness stand
What happened that night in Brentwood

Petrocelli also offers insight into the larger issues--of race, wealth, celebrity, and police competence--surrounding the case. He places the trial in its proper context and, in so doing, examines legal questions and issues about our justice system that affect and reflect upon every one of us.

Triumph of Justice proves, conclusively, that O.J. Simpson told lie after lie and that he did indeed kill his ex-wife and an innocent man. It is the story you haven't heard about the trial you didn't see and is the closest, most in-depth look at an important murder case since Helter Skelter.

Amazon.com Review
Daniel Petrocelli is the attorney who represented Fred Goldman and his family in their civil suit against O.J. Simpson for the death of their son Ron. (As such, he also coordinated the simultaneous prosecution of suits brought by Ron Goldman's biological mother and by the estate of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.) In Triumph of Justice, Petrocelli tells readers how he was able to succeed where Marcia Clark and Chris Darden failed, convincing a jury that Simpson was indeed liable for the deaths of Goldman and Brown Simpson.

Petrocelli takes us behind the scenes, revealing how he got--and almost lost--the job soon after Simpson walked out of the criminal trial. He goes through rigorous depositions and cross-examinations in nearly complete detail, poking holes in Simpson's ludicrous alibi. Although he has very little good to say about Simpson (whose football exploits he admired before taking on the case), Petrocelli does have professional compliments for his legal adversaries. It's an important element to note--unlike other books from Simpson trial insiders, Triumph of Justice doesn't have aggrandizement or apologies for its author as the top priority. The mission here is simple--to tell the story of how justice was done--and Petrocelli achieves his objective nobly.

Review
Although the Simpson testimony is the most dramatic part of the book, Triumph of Justice is also a fascinating legal procedural. -- The New York Times Book Review, Barry Gewen

outstanding
By Will o' the Wisp
The definitive book on the Simpson case. Daniel Petrocelli and his fellow lawyers brilliantly dissected and debunked every myth about the Simpson case. I found the book very entertaining and well written and an excellent primer on how to do direct and cross examination of a witness.

The book also demonstrated the powerful differences between a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit. The plaintiff lawyers brilliantly used the civil rules of discovery to their benefit. They made a discovery demand for Simpson to provide all the evidence he had of any sort of police conspiracy, contaimination of evidence, evidence of any third party who did the murder, etc. Simpson could not produce a single piece of evidence to support any of these theories. And since he could not produce any such evidence, the court properly refused to allow him to argue those theories at trial. Trials are solely about what can be proven and disproven. They are not forums to throw out every cockamaimie theory you can come up with (the criminal trial in this case).

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to "requests for admission" a powerful mechanism to reduce what has to be proven at a trial---if the opponent admits it, you don't have to prove it. Simpson had to admit that the blood collected at Bundy and in his car was his. And he had absolutely no evidence whatsoever to back up any claim that it was planted.

The civil rules also required Simpson to submit to a deposition and to testify at the trial. If he had refused to testify, he would've forfeited the case. And of course in his deposition and in his trial testimony he lied continuously and in easily provable ways. For every lie he gave the plaintiffs had one and usually at least two different witnesses to impeach Simpson, often testimony from his close friends, Taft, Cowlings, Kardashian and his estranged girlfriend Paula Barbieri, amongst others.

Finally, and most devastatingly, they found the photos of Simpson wearing the same shoes that were worn by the killer at the murder scene. Simpson had previously denied ever owning such shoes. And to try and debunk the photo? He brings in a kooky JFK conspiracy buff as his photo "expert". Then when 30 other photos from a different photographer show up, one of them printed in a newspaper 8 mo before the murders, the game was over for Simpson.

An innocent man doesn't have to lie when he's on trial. Simpson lied. I thought the most powerful argument that Petrocelli made in his rebuttal was concerning the attempt by Simpson's lawyers to trash the reputation of Ron Goldman. If Simpson was truly innocent, why would he try to trash and debase the memory of Ron Goldman? According to Simpson's theory, Ron Goldman died fighting to save the life of the mother of Simpson's children! In fact, if there really someone else who did the murder, then Goldman's heroics might've prevented the killer from going into the home and murdering Simpson's children. But instead Simpson's lawyers ended up mocking Ron Goldman. Only a guilty man does that.

A thorough and engrossing look at the Simpson Civil suit
By bonilloa@teleport.com
I found Petrocelli's book utterly engrossing. I admit now that I was a Simpson trial junkie. Perhaps because of my disgust with the first outcome, it was with excitement that I picked up Petrocelli's book; I was not disappointed. Petrocelli's finest accomplishment with this book is showing how utterly shameless Simpson is. Petrocelli does not hide his incredulity, as well he shouldn't. Using sworn documents and other statements and materials, Petrocelli shows step by step Simpson's repeated attempts to obfuscate, attenuate, and ameliorate. Petrocelli also succeeds in voicing the reader's thoughts, as when he makes comments on specific Simpson lies; he knows what the reader is thinking. If you read one more book on Simpson, make it this one. "After you read this Simpson bible, you must find him liable."

An outstanding perspective of legal management!
By rjreidy2@aol.com
Was drawn to this book because I had seen Daniel Petrocelli on various talk shows. His explanation and legal rationale relative to the important legal and social issues of this case caught my attention. Prior to the publication of his book, I had not read any books relative to the O J case. Petrocelli provides the reader with a behind the scene view as to the strength of his leadership and managerial skills. He was faced with a huge task of evaluating the mountains of legal testimony and evidence from the original case. Where to start? Where would the money to put on a first class case come from? Who should be involved? He takes the reader on his personal journey from the early stages as to whether he should take the case, through his approach to key individuals in his law firm, the rationale he used for delegation, as well as expressing the personal doubts he encountered both prior to and during the case. Soon the reader feels his obsession, his passion and distaste for Simpson, but is still able to become focused enough to develop a very cogent legal strategy. The book certainly is a must reading for any law student because of its awareness in how important it is to have good case preparation. Such an approach may be taught in law school, but when done in an effective way as outlined by Petrocelli, it can be a realistic learning experience. It is even recommended reading for experienced trial lawyers who have an opportunity to reinforce what it takes to develop a thoroughness of legal preparation whenever they represent a client. Petrocelli provides a high quality sense of reality for legal scholars and practioners as to what clients should expect from a legal team in a high stakes winner take all game. The purchase of this book is worth the investment.
