Betrayal of Love

Well! Bryant was something else, wasn't he? First things first and I have to get this out of the way the story line and the reasoning within the story is great.Although the book in its entirety could have been presented a lot better than it actually was. The way in which it was written along with some typos and grammatical errors sort of through me for a loop. Once you get past that and just take the story for what it was you will see it had the potential to be a great book. During some parts of the story I felt it was overly detailed with some information that could have been left out. I'm an honest reviewer so with all that being said the book did keep my attention throughout and kept me interested in the story.

This author has a great imagination so I have high hopes that the next book will be even greater!

Good Book

I have to admit I was a little annoyed with Jocelyn because I thought she should have been more aggressive than passive after going though situations over and over again with her cheating husband. I was looking for more of a reaction but after finishing the book, I realized that women who are looking for their cheating spouse to stop often take more than they should before reaching a boiling point. Overall it was a well written book and I think I know what direction the author is going in and its brilliant. KUDOS Jacqueline a new fan.

I couldn't put it down for a minute!

"Betrayal of Love" was an enjoyable read. It gave a fictitious account of how one person could make another do something totally out of his or her character. Mrs. Carter had enough of the games, lies, and the relapse of her husband's infidelity moves. Guess he didn't realize how much he hurt his family until it was too late. Kudos to the author Jacqueline McDuffie on a great story. I will have to purchase "A Diamond In The Rough".

Ronald B. Adler is Professor Emeritus of Communication at Santa Barbara City College. In addition to his academic pursuits, Ron works with businesses and nonprofit agencies to improve communication among coworkers as well as with clients and the public.

Problems - YES, but STILL a good book!

I used this book along with the free and awesome wibit video series ([...] - thanks Bryan and Kevin!) - and it is a good thing I did. I am a book learner, but occasionally I need things explained by a person, which is where I used wibit to fill in.

1) The book looks great! Colors, layout, paper texture - it makes it easy on the senses to say "give me more!"

2) It is very well organized - better than any other book I've acquired on programming. The index and reference sections make it a snap to find the area you needed to brush up on.

3) MINUS TWO STARS - There are LOTS of errors in this book. I would have only taken one star, but a review of the 3rd edition reviews shows me that they don't take the accuracy of the book seriously.

Conclusion - BUY THE BOOK! The absolute winner would be a fifth edition with everything corrected, but until then, it is still a valuable resource for starting C Programming. Just try everything, break it, fix it, comment on the [...] forums, and be a better programmer for it!

Easy way to learn C when others fail you.

Back in 1999 I took a class and C programming and found the process of programming very frustrating and confusing that I became a server engineer. Flash forward to today and I am forced to write a handful of apps for my Unix/Linux team which would save us time on mundane tasks. I picked up this book knowing that C was a major challenge for me in the past and I am very glad I did. This book clearly explains several concepts with which I could not grasp when I was younger and helpful in learning the C language. If you are interested in learning C as novice or if you are frustrated with other C books by all means get this book. There are a few errors but most of them are with function most beginners will not deal with such as memory manipulation.

About the Author
Luciano Manelli was born in 1975 in Taranto (Italy). He graduated in Electronic Engineering at the Polytechnic of Bari at 24 years of age and then he served as an Officer in the Navy. In 2012, he received a PhD in Computer Science from the Department of Informatics, University of Bari Aldo Moro. Excellent resource, intelligent and literary examples,

This book can be used both as a guide and a learning device. Mr. Ivers explains rules of grammar and common pitfalls in an amusing and intelligent style. He selects references to famous writings to demonstrate different styles of writing. The book can be used easily as a reference guide. It has an excellent index for quick lookups. I also found it to be delightful reading. He carefully chose authors and passages from books, speeches, and even movies and theatre to help convey his examples. I think this would make an excellent adjunct to any college writing program. His chapters on writing tips can inspire one to take out a pencil or word processor and start writing. I think this book is a must for any home, school, or office library.

Wonderful introduction to the craft of writing.

"Random House Guide to Good Writing," by Mitchell Ivers, is an inspiring, entertaining, and informative guide that goes beyond the rules of grammar, syntax, and punctuation. The goal is to "help you turn your appreciation of good writing into an ability to write well."

The author discusses voice, tone, diction, and structure, and he emphasizes the importance of expressing yourself with purpose, using an appropriate style. Always keep your aim and audience in mind when putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Are you creating a novel or short story? Are you writing a letter to a company to complain about a defective product? Do you want to compose an essay persuading your readers that the death penalty is barbaric and ineffective? Or are you dashing off a newspaper article describing a shooting in a fast food outlet? Your choice of words will vary according to the purpose of the piece and your intended audience.

Ivers includes dozens of well-chosen quotations and excerpts from famous authors to illustrate his points. A few lines from "The Wasteland" exemplify T. S. Eliot's formal style of writing as well as his use of classical allusions. Two excerpts, one from Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi," and another from a Chicago Tribune column by the journalist Mike Royko, demonstrate a familiar and informal style. In addition, Ivers includes exercises to help the reader practice the skills taught in each section. The chapters on grammar and usage, and an appendix outlining the guidelines used by Random House's copy editors and proofreaders, are clearly written and filled with excellent examples.

No book can transform everyone into a good writer. However, by following the guidelines in this excellent manual, most writers will learn to express themselves more simply and coherently. Ivers quotes Hemingway, who said, "We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master." This book will not make you a master, but it can help you write with more polish and self-assurance.

A thorough study and good reference work

Iver's book delivers. It is neither sappy as many other writing books are, nor is it without color. Particularly helpful are the sections on grammar and usage. Whether honig your skills or becoming initiated with the complexities of the English language for the first time, this book is helpful. Though Iver discusses some elements of fiction, this book appears to have more relevance for the office or the class room than for creative writing. Yet, anyone will benefit from reading the book and working through its examples.

When Larry coached Hilary Swank for her Oscar-winning role in "Boys Don't Cry," he had her live as a man for a month to prepare for the role. She bound her breasts and stuffed her crotch and had her husband introduce her as his younger brother, all so she could get inside her character's head and experience first hand the fear of being found out. He got Helen Hunt to pull all her energy down from her head into her feet, so she could play the waitress in "As Good As It Gets"--another Oscar performance. About the Author
Larry Moss studied his craft with such luminaries as Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, and Warren Robertson. He began his career at New York’s famed cabaret Upstairs at the Downstairs and went on to appear on Broadway in numerous productions. After teaching at Juilliard and Circle in the Square, Moss returned to Los Angeles and founded the Larry Moss Studio in 1990. His directing credits include the off-Broadway hit The Syringa Tree, which won the 2001 Obie for Best Play of the Year, and a new play opening on Broadway in spring 2005.

An Acting MFA in a book.

I graduated from the Yale School of Drama I also have a BFA from a four year conservatory. I'm not giving away any secrets by telling you that Larry documents just about everything you would learn in the best schools and maybe more. He gives you the best parts of the famous tools from.. Stanislavsky, Meisner, Adler and even Strasberg and shows you how to apply them together as one powerful technique. Throughout the book you can feel his love for the actor and the craft of acting through every chapter and his whole goal is to challenge you to take it seriously to become all you can be.

I will admit that I was slightly bored through lots of it but that was only because for me these lessons were more reminders than enlightening new skills. But, if I was to recommend any book as a starting point for someone interested in becoming an actor, a REAL actor, I would definitely hand them this book. It's all in there! He covers pretty much everything.

The only reason that I'm giving it a four star instead of five is that it could have been a little more of a fun read. Being someone that studied most of this already I would have loved to chuckle more. Sometimes, there were too many examples of movies and plays and personal performances in a specific chapter. Although, many examples might be extremely useful for a beginning actor.

I will say that for someone that shies away from Lee Strasberg's affective memory exercises (think of my dead puppy), he clarifies and makes a great case for me to reconnect with it. Well done! And, you can feel him giving you a good kick in the ass if you're not pushing yourself hard enough. I'm definitely more inspired now!

All in all, it's a book that should come with a degree!!

Larry Moss, I'm blown away

I decided to purchase this book shortly after I had finished Sanford Meisner's book on Acting. Larry Moss has a wonderful no nonsense approach that will help you become a better Actor. For example, pointing out an Actor's own laziness as their demise is just one of the many useful lessons to keep in mind. Larry goes in depth in Script Analysis, Personal Acting Exercises, and much more in this thorough and well-written book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Acting who's looking for new motivation to become better and "Achieve Your True Potential as an Actor".

He teaches health economics and innovation management at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Faculty of Medicine, since 2005) and at the University of Applied Economic Sciences Ludwigshafen, Germany (since 2002). Prior to his university appointment, he spent fifteen years in senior positions with international pharmaceutical companies in Germany, Belgium, and the United States, and six years in experimental brain research and clinical neurology at German universities.

Disappointing advertisement for yet more kit.

Bearing in mind that I am a mature adult and bought this book knowing that it is a collection of magazine article reprints, I still found room for disappointment in its lack of woodworking savvy. Generally speaking, glossy page magazines publish two kinds of articles, some imparting genuine how-to information, the second kind is thinly veiled advertisement masquerading as editorial. Unfortunately, Charlesworth's writing in this volume and his Volume II falls into the latter category, highlighting the difficulty of the task and describing the pieces of shiny kit to help bridge your lack of proper apprenticeship and an acceptable workman-like result. On the other hand, it is exactly as it purports: a reprint of successful and popular magazine articles. The photography and print quality are superb, earning one star more than the two stars that I feel it deserves.

A good book, but not as good as the first two

I am a big fan of David's and I must confess that I was a little disappointed in this book. I also own the first two, and the material there seems much more common and useful. This book includes material such as making a metal plane from a kit. The company that offered the kit is no longer in business, so the material is somewhat less relevant. There is an article on making a spokeshave adjuster for the Boggs shave. In my opinion, this is a solution looking for a problem. A small tap with a hammer like with any wood plane is a simple adjuster for the spokeshave. I just didn't find much of the material useful overall.

I guess I would much rather see more material on furniture techniques such as drawer fitting, veneering, dovetailing, and hardware fitting. But I guess this would be a different titled book!

First rate !

Excellent Book. The chapters on tuning hand planes together with the information on Japanese chisels is superb. The improvements I made to my Record #05 have made the world of difference to it's performance. The chapter on making an ebony spokeshave, using the blade made by Ron Hock certainly made me think.
I just wish there was more available from this author.
