A Game Changer

First of all, let me tell you the condition that I was in when I read this book, because it totally changed my life. I was involved in the drug culture of the '60s; and my life went downhill fast. I started reading the King James Bible for spiritual help. That's all I had. I saw that I needed help, so I asked my mother the have our local Greek Orthodox priest come over to help me understand the Bible. Sounds reasonable, right? I showed him Malachi 2:7 from the King James: " For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts." Well needless to say, he couldn't explain this scripture. I then asked him how I could follow Jesus in my life. A reasonable question. He told me not to think too much about these things. By the way when he first came over he bummed a cigarette off me, instead of offering a prayer. When he left he had his hand out to my mother for money! Then he left. I could see that that religion didn't have the truth from God's word. Note that at this time I didn't know a thing about Jehovah's Witnesses.

I kept reading my King James Bible, then I came to Exodus 6:3: "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them." This hit me like a ton of bricks. I was never told that God's Name was Jehovah in my church.

So I picked up the phone and called Jehovah's Witnesses. I didn't even know who they were. But I started studying "The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life" in Dec. 1970. I studied for a month , but I felt that these people were just too good and that I was a hopeless sinner, so I stopped studying.

However while I was studying the brother gave me a box full of books. Six months later I picked up The Babylon the Great book. This was exactly what I was looking for. It exposed the falseness of the religions that only claim to be Christian, but disown God by their actions, for example like getting involved with politics, and teaching unbiblical doctrines like hellfire and the trinity. This book discusses Revelation Ch. 14-22 as well as parts of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel. It also refers many times to the book "The Two Babylons" by Alexander Hislop.

This book completely changed my life and I got baptized in Dec. 1971. And I never looked back.

Callen Harty is a writer from Monona, Wisconsin where he lives with his partner, Brian, and many pets. He is the author of My Queer Life, a collection of essays, speeches, poetry, and more around the theme of living life as a queer man. He has written 23 full-length plays, a one-act, and dozens of monologues. In addition his essays, articles, and poetry have been published in newspapers and magazines around the country. He is also a well-known LGBT rights activist in Wisconsin, as well as an activist who writes and speaks about child sex abuse survival.

Callen is a gifted writer who honestly and from the heart shares his personal story of childhood sexual abuse. He is a courageous survivor who will no doubt help many who have experienced this form of abuse. May his strength help ease the burden for numerous survivors. Well done, Callen.

A Must Read for Survivors Or Their Families

My review of Callen Harty's book comes with mixed feelings. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse myself, I have tremendous admiration for the bravery and wisdom within this book. Because I live among the isolated and damaged population of abuse victims I can easily relate to the desolate emotions and self-destructive behaviors that Harty chronicles in painful detail. Although our stories differ, in many ways we are all the same as sexual abuse survivors, men and women alike. Presently, the leniency afforded to the convicted rapist Brock Turner has young women writing eloquent and moving letters about their experiences of sexual violence. They rightly highlight our society's ugly tendencies for shaming and disbelieving victims. I would invite the public to imagine what that might feel like as a seven or eight-year-old,as someone without the emotional or intellectual development to process these very same emotions, as someone without a voice. Callen has taken this pain and channeled it into advocacy, outreach and art. For that, I deeply admire Mr. Harty.

Yet as a reader I found the text to be lacking in certain literary qualities that make for a great read, regardless of subject. We learn about numerous incidents of abuse and although dredging those buried horrors is tremendously healing and cathartic for the author, the fifth or sixth or even seventh description of still another sexual assault doesn't advance the narrative much. Another misgiving I have about the book is its emotional and intellectual comprehensiveness. By that I mean the reader cannot truly engage with the text because he's never given the opportunity to digest the information in the book on his own. The text comes fully digested from the author with conclusions and justifications and every manner of contemplation. The processing of events bars the reader from reaching an independent assessment of the narrative. It's a double edged sword: we receive an enlightened viewpoint worth reading but that viewpoint also stifles the reader's own opportunity for analysis.

In all, this book is far more important as a watershed for the survivors of childhood sexual abuse than as a literary work of art. The narrative is genuine and that trumps cute authorial technique. Any of the estimated 42 million Americans who've endured the pernicious abuse he discusses will relate. Any of the friends, families and spouses of survivors will also find the book informative. It will begin to answer why you sometimes feel like you are living with a crazy person. Callen's journey is our journey, at least it can be if we work as hard as he has .
