A young cowboy cares for his five little ducks, and he scurries around to bring them three sacks of food and four bundles of hay with his two hands. When each duck brings a friend, the boy has double the ducks, so he needs to double the hay and double the food. For that, he needs double the hands to do the work--so, luckily, a friend joins him. The numbers are on the pages and so are all the things to count. In a double-page spread at the back of the book, Murphy suggests lots of activities and games for parents to use in the kitchen and at play to make preschoolers' first steps into addition and multiplication more fun. Doubles made fun and easy

Love this book! The kids always love the doubles that are happening in the book, and they all especially love the ending! The boy works hard and then finds a friend to help with the hard work. It is a book they read over and over in the classroom and enjoy! Really reinforces the doubles in a creative storyline.

Cute story, but not so great at teaching math concepts

I am disappointed that I made this purchase because my main goal was to teach the math skill, not just to have a cute book for our bookshelf. There are some good and bad things about the book.

Pros: The illustrations are adorable and younger children will be drawn to the book. I would say it's geared to children under 7. I like the concept of the story where a boy is taking care of 5 ducks and then they each bring home a friend so he needs double the items to take care of them (food, hay for a bed, etc). I also think it is great that at the end of the book there are two full pages for the parents that give a bunch of activities you can do with your child to reinforce the idea of doubling. On another positive note my sons loved it. I'm not saying they LEARNED from it, but rather that as a stand alone story they found it entertaining.

Cons: The prose reads a little awkwardly. It's not a rhimey book which is fine but it also doesn't sound that smooth to read aloud to a child as many great kid's books do. From a math perspective (which is why I purchased it) I was actually very disappointed. I don't think the book does a good job of bringing the concept of doubling down to the child's level. As the latter half of the book is dedicated to the care of the ducks once there is a double amount, the author should remind young children how many of each thing was needed beforehand. Pages later a small child isn't going to remember how much there was in the first place for the five ducks so I doubt this is going to help them understand that the number is "doubled" which is the point of the book.

For example, on page 22 the book shows the boy feeding all 10 ducks. the only thing it says on the page is "I need double the food, six sacks a day, to feed to my ten little ducks" and to the right their is a picture of 6 sacks of grain and a big number 6. The number 3 (that is doubled) is not mentioned at all on this page. The child would have to be able to remember back from page 10 that the boy fed 5 ducks with 3 bags. I would like to see the math equation also referenced even if it's just a small part of the picture like showing two separate groups of 3 adding up to 6.

I ordered another book about doubling and if you check my other reviews in a few days I'll let you know what I think of that one for teaching the math skill.

Not so great

I bought this item to teach the concept of doubles to first grade students mainly because I like the way that math concepts are introduced in Stuart J Murphy books. However, I was not at all impressed with this book. The text does not clearly indicate doubles, and the story is a bit senseless. I decided not to use it for teaching purposes at all. I have many Stuart J Murphy books and would recommend many of them for instruction or for introducing a new topic depending upon the grade level knowledge of the student or students, but I cannot recommend this one AT ALL.

VERY down to earth and useful!

I loved this book! It's really down to earth, easy to ready and easy to convert to action in my own business. It's a book that someone who is a budding business owner would find extremely valuable as well as a seasoned business owner. Our world is changing so rapidly and the concepts/matrix of this book provides any business owner with tools to support growth and profitability in all the changes we have now and are sure to have in the future. In every aspect the book teaches us about Partnership in all its forms. Effective partnership is the essence of success for the future of any business in our rapidly changing world.

A gem! I highly reccomend that you read this book.

Overall, I found the book to be a very accurate portrayal of the
experiences that I have had in building my own company. Having
worked closely with Michael Walsh & Kaizen Consulting, I found
it interesting to see the concepts we have been working with for
several years presented in this book. While no single text can be a
complete resource, I am incredibly impressed with this collection of
business practices. A reader can expect to achieve piercing insight
into his own operation while reading about Sponge UK ... and new
insights each time the book is read. I feel inspired to apply what I
learned to my own operation immediately.”

"African Sculpture speaks" ... to its readers

Very interesting. Information presented in a very organized way. An excelent way to get aquainted with the subject of African Sculpture. The ony flaw is that the book was published in this late edition in 1975 and so much work has been done sence then in the study of African Art that it does have some blank spots, but over all this is a good start and one of the best general works and texts that I have seen. Images are black and white, but this works to the sculptures advantage so that you can see more of the relief work and shadow. The book is very well organized, topics ranging from mythology and magic to general history and socio-cultural impacts of the west are covered.

African Sculpture Speaks has spoken very well. One of the most interesting documentations of Sculpture I have seen in quite some time. There is a wealth of 436 illistrations in black and white, lending an impression of the significance of each piece. Also information on each tribe and the functional use of the sculptures was brillant. Segy has successfully documented an ancient tradition that is in a rapid mode of metamorphosis due to technology. But most of all African Sculpture Speaks allows you to experience a rich part of Africa in the comfort of your own home.

I just bought "AFRICAN SCULPTURE SPEAKS" and again I am pleased with the down to earth approach and examples of sculptures of the different tribes throughout Africa. Ladislas Segy is covering a far greater theme in this book than in his "MASKS OF BLACK AFRICA", however, it is a great aid for identifying some of the carving styles.

Great Book!!!

Career changes and job searches often lead to some very interesting paths. The natural instinct is to take the path of least resistance; cross where it makes sense, essentially jaywalk, and not detour. Yet, sometimes, the detour is necessary in order to get to where you want to go safely.
The average person will have 4 different careers during their working lifetime. When you need to make a career change, it’s necessary to find that crosswalk. The important thing to remember about a crosswalk, is that it’s not a place to linger. It requires action and a first step. It’s also, safe.
Taking that first step can still be risky. We can’t always rely on the fact that other drivers are paying attention. Traffic is still moving around, even though there’s a green light indicating safe crossing. But what is life without an element of risk? What is a career without taking a chance every now and then and seeing what can happen?

As you’re standing at your career crosswalk, what are you thinking? Does making a major career move seem too risky? Does sacrificing what you know currently as “good” remotely compare to Jesus removing himself from His Heavenly glory and suffering and dying for you? Does the decision you have to make on a principle of faith include an element of risk that endangers your life or that of your family?
Realistically, what kind of sacrifice or risk do you have to take when you place your hope, faith, and trust in the Lord? God will lead you to a crosswalk where you can move safely. The green “walk” sign will flash, and even if traffic is moving about you, you can trust that God will deliver you to your destination safely. God DOES PROVIDE; there’s no need to doubt that fact. God needs YOU to trust, focus upon His green arrow, approach HIS crosswalk, and take that step.
God’s crosswalk could take on many different forms, shapes, sizes, and directions. His crosswalk may have some turns in it. It may not always be an exact straight path. In order to recognize God’s designated crosswalk you must look at it with your faith lenses on. It’s probably not going to look like the crosswalks we see everyday. It might not even make sense. Remember, we can’t fathom God’s wisdom…our minds are limited.

Carefully consider the choices before you today and contemplate your next career move. Put God first, approach His crosswalk, and know that He will safely lead you to a place of blessing and peace.

Read, Plan and Succeed!

I am a planner, and love to know how, when, where and what it is going to take to get me to my goal. Since one of my goals for 2014 is to become a VA, I was thrilled to read Alyssa's book. Inside it's pages I found everything I need to help realistically plan and complete my goals for becoming a VA in 2014.

Each chapter is filled with Alyssa's personal knowledge of what it took to get where she is, and what she would recommend you NOT do in your journey to becoming a VA. I love when author's take the time to be real and honest in their writing.

The links to additional training and blog posts relevant to each chapters topic are wonderful assets as well! Alyssa's heart for teaching and training up and coming VA's is apparent throughout this short eBook. I am looking forward to poking around her videos, classes and website more!

I am also very excited to sit down and really map out what my niche is and know that I have the choice to decide what I do want to do as a VA, and what I DON'T want to do.

I highly recommend Alyssa's book to anyone who loves to plan for their VA goals and see them come to fruition!

His thesis, which he explores with case after case, is that historians employ a double-standard with regard to covering history, basically serving a propagandistic role in our society, camouflaging the bad deeds of business and government, even as they claim to be objective and neutral outsiders.
It's a similar argument that's made with the media, and no less important here. He argues persuasively (and thoroughly) for a radical approach to history, changing the role of historian to sideline cheerleader for the status quo to active participant in true social change.
Because this book deals with a lot of history, it may be of limited interest to folks who aren't already into history, hence the four-star rating. But for anybody who does find history interesting, I strongly recommend it.

Essays by activist historian

Zinn makes perhaps the best points in this book early on, in his first essay "Knowledge as a Form of Power." Here he quite correctly notes that academia in America (and this is equally valid elsewhere in the world) tends to produce mountains of "inconsequential studies" which do little to add to our general knowledge or understanding, much less provide a basis for future action. What makes this statement so damning is that Zinn first wrote it over 30 years ago, and it's still applies today. Most of the essays in this book are dedicated to arguing that history and other social sciences should be more socially active, and that its practitioners should not hide behind objectivity and neutrality but rather "put their knowledge to work." Zinn backs the latter point by noting that even in the `hard' sciences there is subjectivity, which is what formulating theories is all about. Even so, several times he warns against omission or doctoring facts to suit the needs of idealism or ideologically driven agendas - in this context, he wisely includes this truism by Mannheim: "while ideology is the tendency of those in power to falsify, utopianism is the tendency of those out of power to distort." Zinn's views on scholarship and the philosophy of history are illuminating, and his specific essays dealing with the Ludlow Massacre during a miners' strike in Colorado in 1913, Hiroshima or the Allied bombing of the French town coastal town of Royan even after Nazi withdrawal (in which Zinn himself participated as a bombardier in U.S. warplane) provide a great deal of otherwise hard-to-find information and commentary on these events.

Provocative and Timely Essays on the Nature of History, Historians, and the Public Sphere

Howard Zinn has the distinction of being both one of the most distinguished and provocative historians of the United States. His leftist philosophy permeates his writings and never fails to challenge his readers. "The Politics of History" is a superb collection of his earlier writings, originally published in 1970 but still persuasive in the twenty-first century. The twenty essays in the volume range from labor political history to historiography to issues of race/class/nationalism to freedom and responsibility. Throughout Zinn asserts a radical approach to history, one that "participate[s] a bit in the social combat of the time" (p. 3). He believes that the historian should be not just a reporter of the past but an advocate who interprets the past for the benefit of the present. He confessed, "My chief hope is to provoke more historical writing which is consciously activist on behalf of the kind of world which history has not yet disclosed, but perhaps hinted at" (p. 3).

Zinn explicitly pursues historical studies what adhere to the accepted standards of scholarship that also encourages "a higher proportion of socially relevant, value-motivated, action-inducing historical work" (p. 2). He believes it is time that scholars earn their keep in the world, and the best way to do that is to cease to be neutral, instead agitating for change in the world. All of his studies, including those in this collection, do just that by telling the story of the underrepresented, the dispossessed, and the trod upon. His emphasis is on class struggle, bigotry and racial strife, inequality and feelings of superiority, injustice, and nationalistic fervor.

I found especially useful Howard Zinn's statement in his essay in this volume on "LaGuardia and the Jazz Age": "There is an underside to every Age about which history does not often speak, because history is written from records left by the privileged. We learn about politics from the political leaders, about economics from the entrepreneurs, about slavery from the plantation owners, about the thinking of an age from its intellectual elite" (p. 102). His work represents an effort to move history in another direction. As he concluded in the essay, "Philosophers, Historians, and Causation," which also closes this volume: "So here is something for us to do: we can begin the withdrawal of allegiance from the state and its machines of war, from business and its ferocious drive for profit, from all states, all bullying authorities, all dogmas" (p. 368). Only in this way can historians begin to offer a new history of the world, and in the process, he hoped, become a cause of change.

This is a provocative collection, one that should be read by all who want to explore the history of the United States. It is alternative history at its best. It is political commentary that is both powerful and inviting.

A well written friends-to-lovers traditional regency

The hero has been the heroine's imaginary Paris to her Helen ever since they met and became best friends a number of years ago. She knows her feelings are not returned because he tells her just about everything, and she has learned to live with that. Instead, she throws herself into reading ancient books and enjoys the level of friendship they have. But when the fathers of the hero and heroine plan to marry them off, their relationship is suddenly thrown off-balance. Drama ensues when the heroine unknowingly accepts the hero's halfhearted proposal, the hero tries to break things off with the girl he is infatuated with, the heroine thinks it's best to end their engagement, and things change irrevocably between them.

For a novel containing an unrequited friends-to-lovers plot, Friday Dreaming is quite well done. To be sure, there is a fair amount of angst throughout as misunderstandings and hurt feelings abound. But there is good deal of enjoyable humor, and - more importantly - an undeniable feel of authenticity to the troubled romance. Maybe it's the fact that the hero is a generally honorable young man, all things considered, and has the highest respect for both the heroine and their friendship. Or the fact that the heroine's anguish is understandable, and yet she still makes a good show of being a sensible young woman. Whatever it is, Friday Dreaming comes off as a relatively sweet and genuine discovery of love.

Could've been better

I think that this story had the potential to be so much better than it was. It's never easy reading an unrequited love story particularly when the h has so little going for her (the way she was portrayed). She's had a thing for the H for years but although they are great friends, he really doesn't see her. He's gorgeous and she's not. She comes across as an eccentric, myopic blue stocking that no one respects terribly much. The H proposes to her on her birthday and treats her pretty badly that day - not wishing her for her birthday and not staying for dinner. He's basically forced into proposing to her by his father else his allowance will be cut. He wants to marry a woman that his father thinks is unacceptable but he loves this woman. The h breaks the engagement and their relationship is affected. She chooses not to remain friends with the H and it affects him. Slowly he comes around to acknowledging how he really feels. Unfortunately for me I couldn't get past how badly everyone treats the lovely h.

Still Relevant in DTaP age

I heard about this book soon after my daughter had a vaccine reaction in 2002. I figured the contents might not apply to me since my child got the DTaP vaccine (with acellular pertussis) instead of the no-longer-in-use DTP with whole cell pertussis. I finally decided to read it in late 2004.

I couldn't believe how very relevant and applicable the book is to my situation in 2004. Yes, this book IS STILL VERY RELEVANT in a world where DTP has been replaced by DTaP.

How is it still relevant?

In my case, my child had inconsolable high pitched screaming for 6 hours straight after her 4 mo. shots. As explained in the book, high pitched screaming is a known and well-documented adverse effect of the whole-cell pertussis component of DTP. My child did not get DTP but instead got "the safer" DTaP, and yet this reaction still occurred. There were also longer term side effects that this book would categorize as neurological. My infant stopped making eye contact for over a week, and my previously vocal and communicative infant stopped cooing for nearly 4 weeks!! How I prayed every day God would give me my baby back!

When I reported the longer term side effects to my doctor, she dismissed it as "anecdotal" suggesting there is nothing in the data to support that a lack of eye contact or loss of cooing could be caused by any vaccine. I couldn't believe the disrespect and disregard for my report of the facts of what had occurred. This book offered some relief and support in this regard because I know now that I am not alone. And this is unfortunate. Other parents of children who have vaccine reactions are treated similarly by their pediatricians.

I concur with asking the question posed by the author, exactly when did the medical community switch from listening carefully to reports of symptoms from parents and patients and begin to listen only to published reports from controlled studies - most of which are funded by organizations with a conflict of interest? Something is very wrong with a system that denies and dismisses the valid reports of concerned parents who have witnessed changes in their child post-vaccination.

In my case, prior to reading all I could get my hands on about vaccines, I was ready to agree with the doctor that my daughter should continue with all other vaccines eliminating only the pertussis vaccine. Then, just before the next round of shots were given, a last minute record review indicated that the leg that had swollen up like a goose egg was not even the leg where the DTaP was administered!! Polio and Hib went into that leg!!

So what a quandry for this parent, indeed! Which toxin caused the swollen leg? Which toxin/vaccine/component caused the loss of eye contact? Which caused the cessation of verbal cooing and the ongoing restlessness and the changes in sleep patterns? Was it acellular pertussis? Or was it diptheria, tetanus, hib, or polio? Or could it have been some ingredient in the vaccines, a preservative or adjuvant material? Could it have been carryover materials from the human fetal cells or animal cells used in manufacturing? No one will ever know. Nor will answers ever come as long as the medical community continues to deny that vaccine reactions occur.

The last sentence of the book reads, "The time has come to become educated about vaccines."

I completely agree with the author on this point and think others will too after reading this book and others on the topic of vaccine safety.

Do not fail to read this book!

This book is a MUST read for parents and parents-to-be. If it has ever even occured to you that the medical system is not infallible, this book will open your eyes to a reality that most people would prefer to ignore. Vaccinations DO cause temporary and permanent damage to children every year in this country, and many of the diseases against which we are vaccinated are not as frightening as the damage caused by the vaccinations themselves.
This book focuses solely on the DTaP vaccination. There are many case histories of children who were permanently brain damaged and even killed by this vaccination. In some cases more than one child in a family has been permanently injured. In others parents have had to fight in court to retain custody of their younger children when they refused to vaccinate them following severe reactions in their older children.
The companies that manufacture vaccinations are making millions of dollars per year. When a child has a permanently debilitating reaction to a vaccine, the manufacturer is not even held financially responsible - the government uses our tax dollars to compensate families through an official program called the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Would this program even exist if it weren't obvious that vaccines DO cause damage in some instances?
This book gives great information about the kinds of children who are more likely to react to vaccinations, including those who were born prematurely or with a low birth weight, those from families with allergies and food sensitivities, and those who had family members experience vaccine reactions. It also describes in great detail the kinds of reactions one can expect from vaccinations - and which ones should not be considered "normal" despite what your pediatrician's office may tell you. If your child has received some vaccinations already and you feel uncomfortable about any symptoms he or she exhibited in the days following, READ THIS BOOK before you allow any further vaccinations. MANY children who were eventually permanently injured exhibited reactions to earlier vaccinations that were ignored or considered unimportant until hindsight provided the obvious answer.

Pertussis Vaccine side effects are real and have been hidden

I am an RN, and have been taking care of a child with seizures, and brain damage for over a year now.
The parents gave me his history.
The theory was that the seizures and developmental problems, which started after 3 months of age in an otherwise totally normal child until that time, were caused by the pertussis vaccine.

There was never a way to prove his problems were due to the vaccine, although all tests on the child and parents were negative as to any cause.

I cared for this child for a year before I read the book.

I was amazed at the similarity of his history with that of many other children in the book, and when I finished reading the book, there was no
question in my mind that this child's problems were due exclusively to the vaccine.

Anyone considering parenthood,are pregnant, have newborns,are grandparents; owe it to themselves to read this book.
Be informed of the side effects so your child won't be one of the statistics. There are other alternatives, and also the new acellular vaccine is available now, but only to those who ask until the old vaccine is no longer available.
